| School of Public Health was set up in 1950. It was formerly known as the Public Health Office of Peking University Medical College. In 1952, after Peking University Medical College was separated from Peking University and became an independent college, it was renamed as Department of Public Health and in 1956, it was renamed as Department of Health. In 1985, Beijing Medical College was renamed as Beijing Medical University (BMU) and the Department of Health was renamed as School of Public Health. In 2000, BMU was merged into Peking University and renamed as Peking University Health Science Center. School of Public Health became one part of Peking University Health Science Center. The graduates of the school are working in many fields both at home and aboard. Most of them are the nucleus force in the fields of preventive medicine, public health, health management and medical education in China. School of Public Health consists of seven departments , one central lab，and one research institute, namely, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Department of Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences, Department of Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Department of Child ,Adolescent and Women’s Health, Department of Toxicology, and Health Education, Central Laboratory and Institute of Child and Adolescent Health of Peking University. | school, including 29 professors and 28 associate professors ; among them 9 are doctoral supervisors. The present enrolment of the school is 562, including 59 doctoral and 183 master candidates, and 320 undergraduate students.
The school has the speciality of Preventive Medicine for undergraduate students. Since 2001, the school has been offering a 7-year program in Preventive Medicine. The students who have completed 7-year program will be conferred with a Master degree. The school offers six master and doctoral programs, which are Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences, Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Adolescent Health and Maternal and Child Health, Toxicology, Social Medicine and Health Management. The School of Public Health is offering a postdoctoral program of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, attracting doctoral students from various disciplines of preventive medicine. Since 2003, the School has been offering program of Master of Public Health (MPH). The school also offers adult learning programs in preventive medicine and in health management. Epidemiology and Biostatistics in School of Public Health is the national key discipline. In 2004, the Ministry of Education key laboratory of Epidemiology was set up in the school. The School has the Teaching Center for Preventive Medicine Experiments and three collaborating research centers, they are Center for Evidence Based Medicine, Center for AIDS Prevention Studies, Nutritional and Functional Food Assessment Center. For the past ten years, about 200 research grants from National Key Projects, National Natural Science Foundation, national ministries and committees and international research foundations, etc were received by the school. Faculty of the school won more than 50 research prizes. The school ranks foremost in China’s public health education and research. The school has been continually building up its international interchanges and collaborations. It maintains a good collaborative relationship with the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Infants and Children Fund (UNICEF), the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC), and the China Medical Board in New York (CMB). International exchange programs have been established between the school and leading institutes aboard, such as Harvard University, Yale University and Johns Hopkins University of the United States; University of Sydney, La Trobe University and Griffith University of Australian; Seoul University of Korea; The Chinese University of Hong Kong and so on.[GO TOP] |
